You must be willing to take medication to suppress your immune system and stay close to the transplant center for monitoring and therapy. Your family and friends will support you through the process.
1. Donor Age
Lung transplants are a life-saving operation for people who have severe lung disease. Patients are required to take medication to dampen their immune systems, lowering the risk of organ rejection and other complications. However, these medications can lead to serious side effects. As a result, many people on the waiting list are too sick to get a lung transplant. Fortunately, the outlook for lung transplants has improved in recent years.
The lungs are carefully screened to ensure that they are healthy enough for transplant. Then, the organ is matched with a patient based on several factors, including age. The organ is then surgically attached to the recipient’s rib cage, where it stays in place for the rest of the patient’s life. Most people who receive a lung transplant are between the ages of 18 and 65. However, it is possible for children and older adults to receive the surgery.
Researchers have looked at the impact of donor age on lung transplant survival rates. The results suggest that donor age does not significantly affect 1-year risk-adjusted survival rates. But, despite these findings, some centers are reluctant to use lung grafts from donors over 60. These concerns are based on previous studies from before the LAS era, which showed reduced long-term survival for recipients of donor lungs over 60.

Lung transplants are usually performed on people with end-stage lung disease, including emphysema, cystic fibrosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and sarcoidosis. These conditions can cause shortness of breath, chronic coughing and exhaustion. If left untreated, these conditions can lead to death.
Over the past several years, lung transplantation has become more widely available to people with advanced lung diseases. However, the need for lungs is still greater than the number of organs available. This leads to significant waitlist mortality for those waiting for a lung transplant. In an effort to improve lung transplant outcomes, many research teams are looking for ways to expand the pool of available lungs. For example, scientists are testing a drug that can help reduce constricted blood vessels in donor lungs, allowing them to be more easily used in a lung transplant.
Some studies have shown that older age donors may offer some advantages, such as a lower risk of postoperative complications. The researchers gathered data on patients in the UNOS lung transplant registry who received a lung transplant between 1992 and 2016. They analyzed each patient’s age at the time of the operation and tracked outcomes through their first year after transplant. They also compared the results between young and older transplant patients to see how age affected outcomes.
Younger patients had higher survival rates – at least in the short term. This may be due to the strict health screening and medical history that young patients undergo before being approved for the surgery.
Older patients had lower survival rates, despite having the same types of lungs as younger recipients. This might be due to the aging process, which can impact the immune system and increase the risk of rejection.
Overall, survival rates improved over the study’s 20-year period. Whether it’s because of better treatments for cystic fibrosis or advances in care, the outlook continues to improve for people who receive a lung transplant.
